This led to creating Late which are the personal feelings I felt at the start of the academic year when I was still getting used to the long commute & figuring out the most efficient route, while hoping that certain issues wouldn’t delay my journey.
Photographs:
To start off the project, we needed to gather visual research which were to be used in our publications.
These are some of the photos I took on my journey from hoo the University.
Thumbnails Sketches:
At the start of every project, I always do thumbnails sketches to get my ideas down visually. That gathered visual research was used as references for these sketches.
Visual Language:
Alongside my original visual language, I experimented with several techniques like illustrating over photographs, collage & media materiality but in the end I decided to go with my visual style as it was more personalised.
To signify the anxiety closing in, I experimented with Mark - making, eventually landing on coffee stains as the marks are unpredictable when dripped or splashed on paper.
Format & Layout:
While sketching out thumbnails using my photo references, I started to think about the layout of the narrative, thinking about how
I would create the layout and what format I would exhibit the narrative.
After much time looking at my sketches and research board, I finally noticed that I could make the format (concertina) in the shape of a train ultimately repeating panels with small noticeable changes within the trains windows and doors.
Taking this a step futher, I would make a custom shape of the train out of bookboard.
Typefaces:
As part of the publication we needed to add some text so I started hunting for stories that portrayed the same feelings & anxiety of being late. To symbolise this immense anxiety I created my own typeface using my Handwriting.
Creating my own typeface was exciting but I needed to workshop Leading, Tracking with Kerning being one of the most time consuming aspects as evidenced below:
Alongside this main typeface, I also used DS - Digital Typeface to display the times for each panel.
